Can you compare the results
of the online course to a similar course taught on the ground? Yes.
OLT's online pre-licensing course was initially developed in the state
of Florida. It's author, Jack Rotzien, CLU has been teaching a similar
on the ground course for both private training companies and Florida
community colleges for nearly 20 years.
In Florida both the on the ground students
and the online students are required to take the same end of course
examination - and score above 70% before being permitted to sit for
the state insurance examination.
The traditional on the ground pre-licensing
course produces a grade point average (GPA) of 81%. The first
three online classes have achieved a cumulative grade point average
of 92.37%.
Dr. Redding, founder of OnLine Training,
Inc., and the individual responsible for the instructional design
of the online course explains the difference this way. "Both
the on the ground and the online courses are effective teaching methods.
The online course has proven to be highly effective for those who
elect to learn via the Internet. We at OLT are gratified to see that
the course is so tremendously effective. We believed our instructional
design was sound. We anticipated the student GPAs would be comparable
to the on the ground results. However, we were pleasantly surprised
when the online course actually produced significantly higher scores."
Abstract:
This paper compares the learning outcomes associated with online
and classroom pre-licensing instruction for life, health, and
annuities. Three classroom groups, private, commercial, and
community college were compared with a community college online
group. The comparative GPA results were 78.35%, 81.62%, and
82.80% for the classroom groups. The cumulative GPA for the
online community college group was 92.37%. It was concluded
that online instruction could be effective. Effect sizes of
the online group compared to each of the other groups was computed
and revealed that a higher level of cognitive learning was associated
with the online group. The higher level of cognitive learning
achieved by the online group was attributed primarily to the
self-selected nature of the students who chose to study online.
However, this study does provide strong support for the conclusion
that Internet based learning can be highly effective.
