The insurance license is a privilege afforded to qualified individuals by each state. Prior to sitting for the State examination, in many states, individuals are required to complete a 30 to 80 hour pre-licensing course. This cram course is designed to supplement the pre-licensing course, provide you with an opportunity to practice taking a test similar to the State examination and allow you to self-evaluate your level of knowledge. As part of this introductory material some guidance is provided concerning State training, application and testing requirements.
Once you are confident of your ability to take the State examination you should call your State Insurance Commissioner and set a date to take your examination.
Once you receive the application and finger print card, complete the application and take the finger print card to the local police department, or other finger printing facility of your choice, to be finger printed. When completed these are mailed to the State Dept. of Insurance along with all fees in accordance with the instructions on the application. When the application has been approved the state will notify Assessment Systems, Inc. of application approval.

Then a contract testing service, often Assessment Systems, Inc., schedules your state exam. Upon completion of the course, the school will send a certification of completion to Assessment Systems Inc.. When your approved application & certificate of completion are matched, Assessment Systems Inc, will mail you a ticket to take the state life insurance agent examination. The ticket will contains directions to nearby test sites, and an 800 number to call to set your test reservation. The test is normally conducted twice daily Tuesday - Saturday by reservation only.
The examination facilities normally consist of a classroom that holds 12 to 20 individuals. Each individual signs into the test facility, presents 2 identifications (at least one with photo.) They are then assigned a test station and module containing their individual test The module is called a testing device and looks like this:
