Course description

- This includes popular literature, classical literature, and commentary on literature and the fine arts.
In the literature and arts course, you will be exposed to all forms of literature. You will be trained on how to interpret what you have read in popular literature, classical literature, and commentary written about literature, music, fine arts, poetry, and drama. The purpose of this section is to help you become a discerning reader on these subjects. You will learn how to analyze style and structure elements in selected passages.

You will practice application of new information to a situation, and appreciate quality in art, and literature. You should be able to complete the post-test successfully and pass the art and literature portion of the GED upon successful completion of this section

Prerequisite(s) Minimum of an 8th grade education or equivalent skills
Course Requirements
Course Requirements

The minimum requirement for admission into each course is the equivalent of an eighth grade education.  This is necessary to insure an acceptable reading level for comprehending the material in the course.  In addition, each student should be self-directed enough to be able to work in the course without direct supervision. 

In order to successfully complete a course, the student needs to take the pretest(s), complete the assignments in the coursework, and successfully complete the post-test.  A timeline of approximately 6 months per course is a reasonable average.

Course Goals

At the end of each course, the student will be able to:

  1. Successfully score a minimum score on the post test as determined by OnLine Training. .
  2. The student will be able to write a lucid and correctly structured essay of approximately 250 words on a given subject within a 45-minute time limit.
  3. The student will be able to successful demonstrate knowledge of grammar sufficient to pass the GED test.
Class Participation Since the students will be located at a considerable distance from the instructor, participation will be measured by the number of times the student signs on the system and attempts the material.  Approximately every two to three weeks, the student should contact the instructor to report progress or a lack of it.  If such contact is not made, then progress is not considered being accomplished.

Biography James L. Harned, Ph.D., Director, Basic Adult Education, has been involved in basic adult education for more than 18 years. Jim holds a doctoral degree in Distance and Adult Education, with a minor in Distance Education from the University of Oklahoma. He has designed and conducted adult education programs in New Mexico and Oklahoma. He specializes in basic adult education and G.E.D. educational programs. He prefers to author courses for delivery in the Moodle virtual classroom, a product of Web Based Training, Systems. While in his doctoral program he designed and taught remedial education courses that enabled marginal students to function satisfactorily in college level courses. He further provided the university faculty with courses on the use of the internet and distance education instructional design. He is the author of the OLT Basic Adult Education series and the lead instructor - teacher - educator in that program. His passions include seeking ways individuals can develop educationally and aiding his students in achieving their personal and professional goals. He seeks to create online learning environments that foster success. Dr. Harned joined OLT in 1998.
