Subject: ICAE and th GEO call to Join Global Action Week
The following message is distributed to NAAPAE mailing lists to encourage connections
between people on our lists an others in the International Council for Adult
Education's network and programs.CAMPAIGN FOR IMMEDIATE ACTION ON THE EDUCATION
FOR ALL GOALS, INCLUDING FREE AND UNIVERSAL PRIMARY EDUCATION BY 2015, A 50%
REDUCTION IN ADULT ILLITERACY BY 2015 AND GENDER EQUITY BY 2005
The International Council for Adult Education and its Gender and Education Office
make a call to join the Global Action Week, April 6-13 2003
The ICAE is joining the third Global Action Week through its World Campaign for
the right to learn throughout life, launched in Porto Alegre in the III World
Social Forum, To this end, we are disseminating information on this world event
organized by the Global Campaign for Education, mobilizing regions and inviting
all NGOs, formal and non formal educational institutions to participate in a
creative and enthusiastic way while joining the Biggest Lesson in History on
April 9, 2003.
The Global Action Week will take place April 6-13 aiming at making a call to
world leaders for them to comply with the year 2005 goal of reaching an equal
number of boys and girls receiving schooling.
People from all around the world will participate in diverse activities with
the aim of attracting the attention of the politicians, the media and the civil
society on the urgency of opening doors of learning for women and girls.
As we start the 21th century, 70 million of girls are still out of schools, and
550 million women, nearly one in every five, are illiterate. The right to learn
throughout life is not only the right to read and write, it means the right to
build a better life.
World Record Attempt at the Largest Lesson in support of the campaign for Education
for All,
On April 9th this year, children and adults from all over the world will be attempting
to break the world record for the Largest Simultaneous Lesson. The aim is to
set a new Guiness World Record and the "teacher" could be a celebrity,
a traditional leader or a prominent woman. Some groups are even planning to ask
adults, including headteachers, VIPs and local officials, to sit in the classroom
and give children a chance to be the teachers.
„
Education is both a human right in itself and an indispensable means of realizing
other human rights. As an empowerment right, education is the primary vehicle
by which economically and socially marginalized adults and children can lift
themselves out of poverty and obtain the means to participate fully in their
communities. Education has a vital role in empowering women, safeguarding children
from exploitative and hazardous labour and sexual exploitation, promoting human
rights and democracy, protecting the environment, and controlling population
growth. Increasingly, education is recognized as one of the best financial investments
States can make. But the importance of education is not just practical: a well-educated,
enlightened and active mind, able to wander freely and widely, is one of the
joys and rewards of human existence".
