On October 10 and 11, 1998, we will host Global Learn Day II, a worldwide Event (240 participating countries) with these Missions: * To firmly establish the second Sunday of October as a day to celebrate learning in every corner of the globe; and * To bring together, in cyberspace,the leaders of distance education, training, conferencing, Internet technology and public service for the purpose of extending education to every corner of the globe; to improve its content by way of the new technology tools; and to pave the way for substantial cost reductions in its delivery. AS AN EXPEDITION- A ROUND THE WORLD VOYAGE: GLDII will open in Guam, hosted by the Governor of Guam. Then, our Clipper, the Franklin, shall sail westward with 70 minute stops in each of these 21 "ports": New Zealand, Japan, China, India, Abu Dhabi, South Africa, Egypt, Russia, France, England, Brazil, Peru, Mexico, Canada, Maine, New York, Oklahoma, Texas, California, finally "dropping anchor" in Hawaii. At each Port there will be real time audio and real time video presentations from and between each port, viewrs around the world and presentations speakers. Passengers can come aboard our Clipper, for free, and need travel no further than their nearest ordinary computer with a 14.4 modem and a late version Explorer or Netscape browser. 200 PARTICIPATING COUNTRIES: In addition to our Clipper visiting 21 ports, we will also have a World Chat Room, where individuals from more than 200 countries will be "on call" to answer questions about concerns in each of those 200 (plus) countries. AS AN EXHIBITION: We will exhibit - more than 100,000 courses now available from hundreds of accredited universities worlwide -more than one hundred universities that offer full degree programs without ever stepping foot on the campus -dozens of post graduate degree programs, both masters and doctorate, available without ever setting foot on the campus. AS AN EXPERIMENT: We will use leading edge technology to Webcast this event so that it can be viewed by anyone with a recent version Netscape or Explorer browser, an ordinary computer and a 14.4 modem. We have the capacity to hold this Event so that as many as 100,000 viewers may interactively participate. Never before has there been an Internet conference with this kind of global audience participation. AS A CONFERENCE OUR FIVE MASTED CLIPPER HAS FIVE GREAT PANELS: Five Panels have been formed, each Chaired by an exceptional individual. These are the Panels and the persons in the Crow's Nest of each Mast:- English as a Second Language- -And the worldwide opportunities that teaching ESL presents -Chair, Mr. Duane Flowers <dpf@ns0.wcsnet.or.jp> Access & Disabilities- -New Ramps with New Tools. No one gets left behind -Chair, Dr. Norm Coombs <nrcgsh@rit.edu> K-1 to K-99- -Lifetime learning is what the 21st Century is all about -Chair, Dr. Cliff Layton <layton@rogersu.edu> Appropriate Technology- -Affordable Access is what this is all about -Chair, Mr. Roger Boston <rboston@tenet.edu> Globalization- -High octane discussions about education, business and politics -Chair, Dr. John McLaughlin <johnmc@esu.edu> Additionally, substantial breakout discussion will be held about virtual conferencing and virtual project management, lead by the organizers of this extraordinary Event. WHY THIS DATE: It is not for nothing that Global Learn Day II is held on the landing anniversary of the great Navigator, Columbus. It is not for nothing we have on our print materials: "Out to do for education what Columbus did for exploration". The Theme of GLD-II is: A Return Voyage to the New World of Distance Education and All of Its Promise. We say it will be remembered as much for the content of the presenters and the opportunities it will expose as it will for the (leading edge) technology methods that enable it to be webcast to every corner of the globe. HARBINGER AND CATALYST OF THE FUTURE: This will be a convincing demonstration of the power of the Internet and the changes it will bring. Will universities survive the change? Will the prices of education and training drop? What impact will globalization have on education delivery? What methods are there to make access to the Web affordable to the six billion who are *not* on line? Can India, Indonesia, China, Nigeria, Brazil use their use their huge populations to leapfrog themselves into the first world by way of the knowledge revolution? Who will be the winners? Who will be the losers? How can *I* find out more???? All of this will be discussed during the 28 hour non-stop Conference, both on the Clipper as it visits the 21 Ports and by way of breakout sessions where the leadership of education, technology and public service will all gather.
