COURSE TITLE:
Identification of and treatment protocols for the addicted or abusing individual.
COURSE PRESENTER: J. A. Tankersley D.C., C.Ad.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1. To equip the physician of the signs and symptoms of alcohol
and other drug abuse, violence, overworking, overeating and the
other characteristics of obsessive and compulsive behavior problems.
2. To prepare a framework for development of a case plan that
involves the family, employer and others concerned with the patients
recovery.
3. Recognition of the pitfalls and successes involved an any permanent recovery project.
4. To provide the physician with the outside referral resources
and necessity of involvement of other professionals in any successful
recovery project.
This course will take the physician through the process of
recognition and identification of abusers, both intermittent and
chronic, as
well as give him a framework within which to "cage"
or engage the patient in a voluntary intervention. Recovery is
a life long process
and there are no "cures" that should be implied. Relapse
is a very real part of the recovery process and each relapse beings
new
insight into the recovering abusers awareness of the triggering
mechanisms and environments that activate his craving/withdrawal
symptoms and behavior to return. Helping the physician become
aware of both the "bio-chemical and environmental risks behavior"
will enable and empower both the physician and the patient to
develop meaningful tools and techniques of avoidance and correctional
actions.
